SMART stands for Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent. The United States education department is offering this scholarship. This scholarship can be provided for students who are eligible for the Pell Grant. And students who are studying in third or fourth year of their bachelor's degree are also eligible for getting this SMART scholarship.

But the student must be studying a degree with a major in engineering, technology, mathematics, science and also a foreign language which might be considered as necessary for the national security. Under this scholarship, the eligible student will get $4000 as scholarship for the purpose of studies every year. In SMART scholarship the students who are poor and who come from poor economical back ground are preferred. SMART scholarship is also granted, in case if a student is already benefited under another different scholarship by the Federal or State government. One of the prime motives of this SMART program is to motivate more number of students to take up the degree programs that are of high demand. If a student wants to get this SMART scholarship he must apply for it, by filling in the required forms and submit it to the education department.

The colleges then will go through all the information provided by the students and will select the students who are eligible to get this scholarship on the basis of many factors like their grade point average and the specialization in their degree. The student must have a grade point average above 3 all through his course. And obviously the student must be a citizen of the United States of America. After the thorough assessment the concerned authorities will select the students who deserve to get the scholarship. The SMART scholarship will not be given to the student in cash but it will be directly sent to the college itself. This will ensure that student does not use the amount for any other matter other than studies.
